Book clubs abound

by Robert Brown

Finding a good book is always an ongoing process and when you find a book that really resonates with you it is an amazing experience.  When that happens, so often you want to discuss and share your ideas about the book with someone else.  At the Adams County Library System, we make book discussions possible with a large assortment of book clubs for all ages.

Over at the Harbaugh-Thomas Library, they have a book club on the third Thursday of the month at 1 PM called Shelf Indulgence. Venturing over to Carroll Valley Library, you can participate in an adult book club on the third Wednesday of each month at 2 PM.  They also have a teen book club that meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM. Swinging over to the New Oxford Library, you’ll find a book club on the second Thursday of the month at 10 AM called Reader’s Forum. If in-person clubs are not your thing, you can check out Cozy Reads, which is a virtual book club, on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM. These opportunities offer a wide range of genres within each club.

If you are looking for something that is specific to your genre tastes then venture to the Gettysburg Library for a wide selection of book clubs. On the first Friday of each month at 1 PM, there is a book-to-film club.  You read the book on your own, then come to the library and watch the film. Afterward, discuss how you think the filmmakers did with your book.  Movies not your cup of tea?  No worries.  There is a historical fiction book club on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of each month at 1 PM that explores a wide range of time periods to suit everyone.  On the second Thursday of every month at 6:30PM there is a science fiction book club that looks at classic to modern science fiction.  If you are a mystery fan, we have a club for you on the fourth Thursday of every month at 1 PM.  All varieties of mysteries are explored.

Not a fan of fiction and have different tastes, we have that covered as well.  Join us for the nonfiction book club every other month on the third Tuesday at 1PM.  This club is a collaboration with The Lutheran Seminary and meets at the Schmucker House, 15 Seminary Ridge in Gettysburg.

Are you someone who likes to read and discuss books but not be told what books to read? Then, you will want to stop by the newest book club at the Gettysburg Library on the second Thursday at 2 PM for Community Book Reports.  Read whatever you like and show up to discuss your book with the group. You will almost always find your next favorite book from other patron’s suggestions.

Book clubs are not just for adults at the Gettysburg Library.  We have a wide range of groups that cater to the needs of younger people.  There is a 1st-2nd grade book club on the first Wednesday of the month, a 3rd-4th grade book club on the second Wednesday of the month, a 5th-6th grade book club on the third Wednesday of the month, a 7th-8th grade book club on the fourth Wednesday of the month, and a teen book club on the fourth Thursday of the month.  All of these book clubs start promptly at 4:30 PM on their respective days.

Lots of discussion and fellowship to be had at the Adams County Library System through our numerous book clubs.  Be sure to check out our website at adamslibrary.org for more information on book clubs and for all the other events that happen here at ACLS!
