British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is resigning

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will step down, ending a turbulent tenure that lasted less than two years and making him the sixth U.K. prime minister to leave office in the past decade.

Starmer said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and would remain in office until a successor is chosen, a process expected to conclude by September. His departure follows weeks of mounting pressure from within the governing Labour Party after poor election results and declining public support.

Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in July 2024, returning the party to power for the first time in 14 years. But his popularity steadily declined amid sluggish economic growth and a series of policy reversals on issues including taxes, welfare and workers’ rights. Labour lawmakers also grew increasingly concerned about the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform Party.

The immediate catalyst for the leadership crisis came after former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham returned to Parliament and positioned himself for a challenge to Starmer. Burnham, who won a parliamentary seat earlier this month, is widely viewed as the favorite to succeed him, though other potential candidates include former Health Secretary Wes Streeting and former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

Starmer’s tenure was also marked by strained relations with U.S. President Donald Trump. While the two leaders initially enjoyed cordial ties, disagreements over military operations involving Iran and the British government’s decision to impose a social media ban for children under 16 contributed to tensions. Trump recently criticized Starmer over immigration and energy policies.

Born in London and trained as a lawyer, Starmer entered politics in 2015 and became Labour leader five years later. He promised stability after years of Conservative rule but struggled to maintain support despite Labour’s commanding parliamentary majority.

Whoever succeeds Starmer will become Britain’s seventh prime minister since David Cameron left office in 2016, continuing a period of extraordinary political turnover in the United Kingdom.
