Bullet basketball remains undefeated as women and men win Virginia tournaments

Women are champs in Arlington

Gettysburg, ranked 15th in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, finished the game on a 13-4 run to pull away from Marymount late and record a 62-47 win in the championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament in Arlington (VA) Saturday evening.

Alayna Arnolie led the Bullets with 23 points, four rebounds, four steals, and two assists to claim the most Outstanding Player of the Tournament honors. AB Holsinger chipped in nine points to go with seven assists and five boards, joining Arnolie on the all-tournament team.

Marymount jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first minute. Alayna Arno hit a 3-pointer to get Gettysburg on the board with 8:52 showing. After a Kelly Ceroll jumper, the Bullets scored seven straight to open up a 10-6 edge with 5:46 remaining. The Saints halted a stretch of 5 minutes, 25 seconds without a point with an Ava Achtyl pull-up. Kaylah Barr tied the game at 10-all before Emily Violante, and  Holsinger hit layups in the final 1:23 to take a 14-10 lead after one quarter.

Four points from Arnolie in the first 2:02 of the third quarter extended the lead to nine, but Marymount countered with nine of the next 11 points to close to within 37-35 with 4:01 showing. Three points from Violante extended the lead to five but Barr hit a jumper to make it a 40-37 game with 1:46 showing. Arnolie, however, drained a triple from the top of the arc as the period expired to stretch the lead back to six entering the final period.

Arnolie pulled up for a 15-footer on the first possession of the fourth quarter, and Lee hit a turnaround 12-footer to extend the lead to double digits for the first time 49 seconds into the final period. The Saints trimmed the margin to 49-43 on an Achtyl putback with 6:39 to play but an Arnolie step-back and then a steal-and-layup stretched the lead back to 10 midway through the period. Two Lee layups around a Violante steal-and-score in just 67 seconds opened up a 59-45 lead with 3:23 remaining. Samantha Bulik hit a jumper with 2:52 to play but that was the last points for the home team. Arnolie put the game away with a her third 3-pointer of the day with 1:27 remaining for the final margin.

Kaylah Barr led the Saints with 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting. She also had five rebounds.

The Gettysburg women return to action at home against York (Pa.) on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Men down Tigers to win Hampden-Sydney tournament

The Bullets built a six-point lead late in the second half before going 6-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final 30 seconds to win its second game in two days against a nationally-ranked team, topping No. 23 Hampden-Sydney to win the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament, 81-78.

Carl Schaller led the Bullets with 24 points, and Nate Williams added 19 points. Bullet senior Jordan Stafford recorded nine points, 11 rebounds, and five assists to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Schaller joined Stafford on the all-tournament team.

After the teams started a combined 2-for-19 from the field, Williams pulled up and hit an elbow jumper for a 5-4 lead with 13:48 showing, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Colin Radcliffe and Hamilton Campbell gave the hosts a 10-5 lead less than a minute later. A Schaller 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 Gettysburg run over just 75 seconds to take a 13-10 lead. After the teams traded buckets, the Tigers put together an 8-0 run of their own for a 20-15 advantage with 7:59 showing. Akim Joseph scored off an inbounds to halt a 3-minute, 13-second scoring drought. The Bullets then put together a 14-2 run to open up a 29-22 lead on a Malachi Briscoe dunk with 4:09 showing. Alex Cannon responded with a follow-up dunk of his own. Hampden-Sydney pulled even at 31-all on a Radcliffe corner trey, but Schaller answered with a wing triple to give Gettysburg a 34-31 halftime lead.

Back-to-back buckets from Shane Farnald gave the hosts a 35-34 edge in the first 90 seconds of the second half. An Ayman McGowan three-point play extended the advantage to 38-36 before Joseph hit a triple, and Schaller drove and scored for a 41-38 Bullets lead with 16:09 to play. Tied at 44-all after an Adam Brazil driving layup with 14:05 showing, Gettysburg went on a 7-2 run to take a five-point lead midway through the half. Radcliffe, however, scored five straight to tie the game once again with 8:58 on the clock. Seven points from Schaller keyed a 10-3 run, giving the visitors a 61-54 lead with 6:47 remaining. Fernald hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to tie the game at 66-all, but Williams drained a kick-out second chance 3-pointer to regain the lead for Gettysburg 69-66 with 3:47 showing. Tied at 71-all, Schaller hit two free throws with 1:26 to play before Brazil connected on just 1 of 2 on the other end. A third-chance layup from Schaller stretched the lead to 75-72 with 46 seconds left. Williams hit a pair from the charity stripe with 25.6 seconds left, and Aidan Mess went 1-for-2 10 seconds later to open up a 78-72 lead. Brazil converted a three-point play with 8.9 seconds left. Trailing 79-75, Brazil then pulled up two steps over halfcourt to cut the deficit to one with 2.6 seconds left. Schaller, however, returned the lead to three with two free throws with just 1.7 seconds left.

The Bullet men return to action at Stevenson on Wednesday. Dec. 4. Game time is 8 p.m.
