Bullets return to basketball action with mixed results

Big second quarter leads to a big win for Bullet women

Gettysburg, ranked ninth in the latest D3hoops.com poll, outscored Susquehanna 20-6 in the second quarter to break a 16-all deadlock after 10 minutes before pulling away late for a 75-52 win in its final non-conference game of the season Saturday afternoon at Bream Gym.

Alayna Arnolie led a balanced Bullets attack with 13 points. She also had six steals. Tatum Murray, one of six players with eight or more points, chipped in a career-best nine by going 3-for-3 from long range.

Gettysburg’s Tatum Murray was perfect from three-point land on Saturday.

Kenzie Selvaggi led the River Hawks with 13 points.

A pair of Carly George layups staked Susquehanna to a 6-2 lead in the game’s first 2:25. The River Hawks remained in front until two Shinya Lee free throws with 3:14 showing gave Gettysburg an 11-10 edge. Grace Meehan responded with two free throws of her own 30 seconds later, and the visitors extended the lead out to 16-11 before a Tatum Murr 3-pointer and two Ava O’Neil free throws in the final 81 seconds tied the game after one quarter.

AB Holsinger hit a pull-up on the opening possession of the second quarter before an Alayna Arnolie steal-and-layup less than a minute later gave the Bullets their largest lead to that point at 20-16. The run extended to 13-2 on a Holsinger triple with 3:47 remaining, opening up a double-digit lead for the first time at 29-18. Five straight points from Annie Greek closed the deficit to seven, but Arnolie canned a 3-pointer with 2:39 to play, and Gettysburg scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 36-22 lead into the break.

The teams then traded points through the first half of the third quarter with the lead oscillating between 12 and 16 points until a Jameson Mott three-point play made it 47-30 at the midway point of the period. Susquehanna could only get as close as 12 en route to a 54-51 game after three periods.

The River Hawks scored five of the first seven points in the fourth quarter to make it a 56-46 game with 8:37 on the clock, but Murray drained a corner trey to push the lead back to 13. Sydney Weyant drove to the hoop to make it a 59-48 game with a 7:59 showing. However, two Holsinger free throws with 7:37 sparked a 12-2 game-clinching run.

The Bullets return to action on the road at Washington College on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Stockton defeats Bullet men with a strong second half

After an even first 30 minutes, Stockton, ranked 22nd in the latest Division 3 basketball, slowly built a double-digit lead to and outduel No. 13 Gettysburg, 96-85, in a non-conference battle Saturday evening on the Ospreys’ home court in Galloway, N.J. The first 30 minutes of the game featured 11 ties and 12 lead changes.

Junior guard EJ Matthews-Spratley had a memorable night for the Ospreys with 41 points and has now scored 75 points in his last two outings. He was 11 of 17 from the floor, hitting five of nine from long range, and went 14-for-16 from the line.

Carl Schaller led the Bullets with 23 points and four assists, and  Akim Joseph added his second straight double-digit scoring game with 14 points on a day when all five starters reached double figures.

Stockton jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the game’s first 3:25. Trailing 11-4, Nate Williams drilled a 3-pointer, and Joseph converted an old-fashioned three-point play to close to within one. Gettysburg extended the run to 13-0 to take a 17-11 lead with 14:11 remaining. Trailing 22-15, three different Ospreys scored to draw the game even with 9:02 to play. Outside of a Schaller 3-pointer that gave the Bullets a 36-31 lead, neither team led by more than three the rest of the half, and a Joseph triple in the final 30 seconds made it a 44-all game at the intermission.

After a Williams 3-pointer made it a 59-52 game, Tayvon Gaither hit two free throws and a turnaround to help draw the game back even at 59-all with 13:37 showing. The teams traded points until a Matthews-Spratley layup gave the hosts a 66-65 edge with 10:56 remaining that they would not relinquish. Clinging to a 73-70 lead after two Aidan Mess free throws with 7:28 on the clock, Campbell hit a second-chance bucket to spark a 16-5 run in just three minutes that started with seven straight points to seize control. Gettysburg got no closer than nine over the final 6:26.
