Bullets Split Doubleheader with Muhlenberg

Emily Colline ’21 went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI in game two.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. The Gettysburg College softball team split its Centennial Conference showdown at Muhlenberg College on Sunday. The Mules (4-10, 4-6 CC) took game one 4-3 in extra innings, but the Bullets (6-2, 4-2 CC) rallied back in the nightcap by tallying 13 hits, eight runs, and seven RBI to claim the 8-6 victory.

Game Summary – Game One…

  • The Bullets and the Mules started the first inning by going three up, three down before the runs came in for the Orange and Blue in the second.
  • Baker was walked and classmate Emily Colline (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) singled to the right field to open the second. Sophomore Allie Cluster (Pasadena, Md./Mount De Sales Academy) flied out on the next at-bat and freshman second baseman Julia Smith (Marydel, Md./Queen Anne’s County) reached base on a fielder’s choice, moving Colline to second while Baker was put out at third. Zucatti accumulated a two-run double to drive home Colline and Smith to put the Bullets ahead 2-0. The double by Zuzatti marked her third of the season.
  • The next couple of innings would serve as defensive stops for both teams until a pinch-hit two-run single by the Mules Samantha Winegard knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Orange and Blue were in scoring position in the top of the fifth as the bases were loaded. Baker drew a bases load walk for the Bullets to regain the advantage 3-2.
  • A two-out pinch-hit RBI single by Dara DiMaiolo in the bottom of the fifth tied the contest at 3-3.
  • Gettysburg had one runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth and neither team had another until the seventh.
  • The Mules threatened in the bottom of the seventh but Hughes helped the Bullets out of a jam as she struck out the final batter to head the game into extra innings.
  • Kristin Oberg brought in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to lift the Mules past Gettysburg 4-3 in game one.

Game Summary – Game Two…

  • Like game one, Zucatti put the Bullets on the scoreboard first with an RBI single to make it 1-0 in the top of the second.
  • Muhlenberg responded right back in the bottom of the second as Muhlenberg’s Kristin Oberg tallied an RBI single to tie it at 1-1.
  • Some defensive miscues by the Mules helped the Bullets tack on another run in the top of the fourth as Quinn gathered an RBI single to retake the 2-1 advantage.
  • A leadoff triple by Sarah Karmazyn and a sacrifice fly by Lauren Griggs allowed Karmazyn to score and knot the game up once again for Muhlenberg.
  • Three straight singles by the Bullets in the top of the sixth helped the squad explode with five runs. Gettysburg scored off a passed ball along with an RBI from Moser and Colline with Cluster collecting two off a double to left center to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
  • Muhlenberg accrued another run off a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and tried to make a comeback in the seventh. The hosts added three runs, but it wasn’t enough as Hughes put in the work by coming in as a relief pitcher in the seventh and struck out the final batter to seal the victory.

By the Numbers

  • Game one marked the first time the Bullets have gone into extra innings this season.
  • Herrera now has a 3-1 record from the circle. She has appeared in four games, three as a starter, to post 11 strikeouts and hold a 1.75 ERA.
  • The Orange and Blue logged in 13 hits in game two marking the second-highest in a contest this season.
  • Gettysburg stands in first in the conference standings with a 4-2 league record and a 6-2 overall mark. Franklin & Marshall College are right behind in second with a 5-3 conference and overall record.

Where the Series Stands
Gettysburg holds a 38-23 all-time series record against Muhlenberg. The two squads split the last time they met in 2019.
