Home canning season is now upon us! All foods that are low acid, which includes vegetables (except picked products or sauerkraut), meats, soups, and all foods combined with them must be canned under pressure. To assure that your pressure canning gauge is accurate, you need to have it tested annually before you start.

Penn State Extension will be offering free gauge testing this July. To have your gauge tested, drop off your pressure canner lid with the gauge attached at the Penn State Extension office in Adams county, 670 Old Harrisburg Road, Suite 204 Gettysburg, PA by July 15. Office hours are 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM Monday-Friday. There is no charge.

Lids can be picked up anytime after July 16. For more information, contact our office at 717-334-6271, or email Lynn James, senior Extension Educator at Ljames@psu.edu
For more information about safe home canning, Penn State Extension is offering a series of home food preservation webinars on a variety of topics.
