The Carlisle Area School District has approved a new policy prohibiting cell phones and personal electronic devices during instructional time, a move aimed at reducing distractions and improving student focus. The school board voted unanimously last week to implement the change, effective with the upcoming school year.
The policy allows students to bring phones and other devices to school but requires them to remain locked away during class and other academic activities. Exceptions will be made for students who serve as volunteer firefighters or ambulance personnel, allowing them to respond to emergencies as needed. Devices may still be used during non-academic periods or school-sponsored events.
District leaders said the decision aligns with a growing nationwide effort to limit device use in schools to enhance learning and protect student well-being. They noted that excessive phone use has been linked to decreased academic performance and increased mental health concerns, leading many educators and medical professionals to support similar restrictions.
