The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is kicking off the new year with over 70 guided hikes across 46 state parks and one forest district on New Year’s Day. The First Day Hikes initiative, part of a nationwide effort, encourages Pennsylvanians to embrace the outdoors and begin 2025 with health and connection.
Hikes, led by DCNR staff and volunteers, range from one to two miles, with some longer treks depending on terrain. Caledonia, Codorus, Cowans Gap, Gifford Pinchot, and Pine Grove Furnace State Parks are among the many hosting events during daylight hours on January 1.
This year’s program highlights inclusivity with Mosaic hikes designed to address accessibility and equity challenges in outdoor spaces. Participants can find hikes tailored for families, seniors, and pet owners on DCNR’s website, providing a complete list of participating locations.
First Day Hikes aim to promote year-round recreation and healthy lifestyles. Since its inception in 2012, all 50 states have participated in this initiative organized by the National Association of State Park Directors.
Hikers are encouraged to document their adventures using the hashtag #FirstDayHikes and join in celebrating Pennsylvania’s natural beauty. Whether exploring scenic trails, uncovering park history, or discovering new activities, DCNR hopes the event will inspire a year of outdoor connection and exploration.
