As a children’s librarian, I love any day that celebrates children and encourages reading.
April 30th is El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day). This day celebrates children, their families, and reading. This day celebrates reading and literacy for children from different backgrounds. It connects children to diverse books and learning about languages and cultures. This day recognizes the importance of all children gaining literacy skills.

This celebration dates back to 1925 in Geneva, Switzerland. The idea was to recognize the well-being of children. When the poet Pat Mora learned about the holiday being celebrated in Mexico, she decided to bring it to the United States. She then combined celebrating children and literacy together to create the holiday.
A love of reading that is formed in adolescents lasts a lifetime. When children find joy in reading, they are given the opportunity to discover the world around them. Developing literacy skills at a young age gives them the tools they need for success.
The Adams County Library System is committed to connecting young children to early literacy skills. We have six branches located throughout the county. Each branch offers programs, books, and services to support this literacy and a love of reading. We offer free resources to all ages. The library celebrates readers every day. You, too can celebrate reading every day. Come check out a book or bring your child to storytime. By providing your child with opportunities to read and be exposed to books, you are encouraging them to become lifelong learners. If you would like to support your youngest learner, visit your local library.
