The Gettysburg Foundation’s interactive children’s history museum Children of Gettysburg 1863® has been named one of the top ten best children’s museums in the nation, chosen by an expert panel and voted by readers as the best in the United States. Children of Gettysburg 1863® is a winner in USA Today’s 2024 10Best Reader’s Choice travel awards for the category of best children’s museum.
Designed for families and groups with children and youth in grades K-5, Children of Gettysburg 1863® is Gettysburg’s most family-friendly museum adventure. The interactive adventure for young historians tells the engaging stories of children, teens and young adults who lived in Gettysburg and the surrounding area during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.
“Children of Gettysburg 1863 breaks down one of the Civil War’s most famous battles into kid-friendly, interactive activities and lessons that center around the lives of the young people who lived through it,” USA Today wrote about the interactive history museum operated by the Gettysburg Foundation. “From story scavenger hunts to hands-on exhibits, it’s the perfect place for a budding history buff to get a better understanding of American history.”
During a visit to Children of Gettysburg 1863®, families are introduced to Gettysburg and its significance while supporting a new generation of young learners on an interactive start to a lifetime of learning, inspiration and creativity. Families and school groups can touch, listen and learn their way through an engaging journey back to 1863 through interactive exhibits, firsthand accounts and meaningful activities. Visitors can interact with living history on the grounds on summer weekends.
Nominees for the USA Today’s 2024 10Best Reader’s Choice awards are submitted by a panel of experts, with 10Best editors narrowing the field to select the final set of nominees. Children of Gettysburg 1863® has ranked eighth among 20 children’s museums across the country. The Gettysburg Foundation is grateful to all who voted for the children’s history museum, as well as to all who have donated or contributed to the success of this museum adventure since opening its doors in 2021.
Located at 451 Baltimore Street in downtown Gettysburg, Pa., Children of Gettysburg 1863® currently is operating on its winter hours through March 31—Thursday through Sunday, Noon until 5 p.m.—and offers free admission for children/youth ages 12 and younger when accompanied by a ticketed adult.
