Church Women United welcomed Hillary Barrick as a guest speaker Oct. 7 at the Church of the Brethren on Biglerville Road. Barrick spoke about human trafficking and the work of Women at Risk International, a Michigan-based nonprofit also known as WAR.
Barrick said she has volunteered with WAR for about 15 years. She described the organization’s work with partner groups in the United States and other countries to help people who have experienced exploitation and trafficking.
Traffickers may use manipulation, threats and coercion to control people, Barrick said. She shared the story of a young woman who began dating an older man who was also her boss. After gaining her trust, he sold her from her home and threatened to harm her family if she resisted. The woman had learned about trafficking through mission work in Thailand, Barrick said, but still became a victim.
Barrick encouraged attendees to learn more about trafficking and recommended The Slave Across the Street, by Theresa L. Flores and PeggySue Wells. She also showed two videos about WAR and its work.
The organization provides support intended to help survivors rebuild their lives and earn income. WAR says at least 90% of the profit from its product sales goes back into its programs. Its WAR Chest Boutique sells items made by artisans, including people served through partner programs. Attendees at the meeting could buy jewelry, crafts and other items.
Barrick urged people to watch for signs that someone may be isolated or controlled, and to speak up if they are concerned. “If you see something, say something,” she said. She also encouraged adults to help young people develop a healthy sense of self-esteem.
People can contact WAR at 877-END-SLAVERY (877-363-7528). The National Human Trafficking Hotline can be reached at 888-373-7888. Reports of suspected child sexual exploitation can be made through the CyberTipline.
Church Women United meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Church of the Brethren on Biglerville Road.
