The Gettysburg High School Girls Basketball team closed out the 2024-25 season with a 6-16 record, marking the second year under head coach Rick Keller’s leadership. While the win-loss column may not reflect immediate success, those within the program see the foundation of something special being built.
When you talk to Coach Rick Keller, one thing is immediately clear: he is dedicated to his team, his players, and the future of Gettysburg High School Girls Basketball. Keller embodies a team-first philosophy and has been instrumental in shaping the program’s culture from the ground up.

Keller began coaching in 2001, initially working with boys’ basketball. But his passion for coaching took a new turn when he switched to girls’ basketball to coach his daughter. His tenure in Gettysburg started at the middle school level, where he quickly earned a reputation for his commitment and knowledge of the game. When long-time Girls Basketball coach Jeff Bair stepped down in 2023, Keller was the clear choice to take over. In a strategic move, Bair agreed to coach one final season, allowing Keller to start fresh with a young, moldable roster.
In his first season at the helm last year, Keller’s performance exceeded expectations. Despite having a team full of new players, he guided them to six wins—just shy of a playoff berth. This year, his second leading the Warriors, Keller has been focused on implementing an up-tempo, aggressive system inspired by Grinnell College and the University of Tennessee women’s basketball teams.
The philosophy features relentless pressure, forcing turnovers, and playing at a high-speed pace to outshoot opponents.
Although the team has experienced mixed results as they have adjusted to the new system, the potential is evident. With a full offseason ahead, Keller is confident that this high-energy style of play will become a defining characteristic of the Gettysburg Warriors.
Beyond his work at the high school, Keller is also committed to growing the game within the Gettysburg community. He played a pivotal role in launching the district’s youth basketball league, which has flourished under his leadership. Today, every grade from first through sixth—except second grade—boasts double-digit participation, a promising sign for the future of the program.
Keller’s commitment to continuous learning is another one of his defining traits. He frequently visits college programs, including the University of Tennessee’s women’s team, to refine his coaching strategies. He also fosters a connection with Gettysburg College, whose women’s basketball team is highly ranked in Division III. By bringing his team members to college practices and games, Keller provides his players with a tangible example of what high-level success looks like.
This exposure not only strengthens team bonds but also instills in his players the belief that excellence is within reach. For those considering playing at the next level, Keller’s approach offers a clear pathway for development and commitment to the sport.
With a strong foundation in place, Keller is shaping a program that will leave a lasting impact not just at the varsity level but throughout the entire Gettysburg school system. His philosophy—always being a student of the game, adapting to his players’ strengths, and fostering a culture of commitment—sets the stage for a promising future.
If his first two seasons are any indication, Coach Rick Keller is on the verge of something special in Gettysburg, and the journey is just beginning.
