Commemorating Mission of Mercy: 30 Years of Healing Through Love

When first meeting Dr. Michael Sullivan, Chief Medical Director and founder of the Maryland-Pennsylvania Mission of Mercy, one is immediately struck by his warm smile and gentle, generous demeanor. Sullivan’s essence exudes kindness and understanding. For three decades he has dedicated himself to caring for others.

Sullivan was treating patients at the mission’s mobile health unit, parked at the Gettysburg Four Square Church on W. Middle St., on Wednesday.  On clinic days Sullivan typically sees 50 patients, treating chronic conditions such as diabetes, cancer, COPD, thyroid disorders, arthritis, and mental health issues.

Dr. Rosyln Robinson-Kellum, affectionately known as Dr. “Roz,” serves as the Dental Director, overseeing dental exams, extractions, and the fitting of dentures in the mission’s dental unit.

Care and medications are offered free of charge to all comers.

The units come to Gettysburg every third Wednesday of the month.

The organization is supported by churches and people from all faiths, as well as grant funding.

Mission of Mercy also benefits from robust community support, with 90 percent of the staff working as volunteers. Local colleges provide assistance with dental procedures such as root canals, and the Four Square Church offers space for the mobile units.

The organization plays a crucial role in strengthening and resiliently supporting the community. “Mission of Mercy’s essence is love, and love remains constant. We believe our prayers are the lifeblood of our mission,” said Sullvan. Linda Ryan, Executive Director, concurred, “Our qualifications aren’t measured by degrees but by the love and mercy we extend.”

In the last two years, Mission of Mercy has been honored with the Gold Standard Award, recognizing their exceptional patient care. Since 2017, they have consistently earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, indicating both excellent service and financial health.

Appointments for medical services can be scheduled by calling 717.339.6914, while dental services can be booked at 410.390.1314. Additional locations include Taneytown, Frederick, Brunswick, Reisterstown, and Harrisburg, with clinics running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Mission of Mercy does not inquire about citizenship status or report to authorities. Interpreters are available to assist non-English speakers.

Your support for Mission of Mercy can make a real difference. Whether through donations of time or money, or by volunteering—even once a month—you can contribute to the community’s well-being. Mission of Mercy is currently seeking volunteers in various capacities, including doctors, dentists, nurses, drivers, and office staff. They also welcome visitors for clinic tours. While the clay shoot fundraiser in Fairfield has concluded, mark your calendars for the 24th Annual Gala on October 5, 2024. To learn more, visit www.aMissionofMercy.org.
