Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania has announced that its Clearfield campus, formerly part of Lock Haven University, will close at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.
In a statement on the university’s website, officials cited declining enrollment and the need for long-term sustainability as key factors in the decision.
“This decision was not made lightly but was necessary to ensure Commonwealth University’s long-term sustainability as we adapt to meet both evolving educational demands and accreditation expectations,” the statement read.
Enrollment at the Clearfield campus had remained low, peaking at just 395 students in 2019, with an average of 305 students annually.
Local leaders expressed disappointment over the news. Clearfield County Commissioner Dave Glass acknowledged the impact but remained hopeful for the campus’s future use.
“I’m glad that university leaders have committed to serving students there through 2027, and it is my hope that another use can be found for the campus facilities, which benefits Clearfield County residents,” Glass said.
Clearfield Mayor Mason Strouse also voiced his concerns but remained optimistic.
“The closing of the Commonwealth University (Lock Haven) Clearfield Campus is a profound challenge for our community and region, but I remain optimistic about the future,” Strouse said. “Many students have benefited from a high-quality education here in Clearfield, staying in our community to build their lives. I hope all avenues have been explored and that a new opportunity emerges to bring a positive impact to our region.”
