With temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and more than 7,000 Adams County residents without electricity on Monday evening, emergency cooling centers and water distribution sites have opened to help residents cope with widespread power outages that began Sunday night and continued into Monday.

According to Met-Ed, full restoration of power for its users may not come until at least mid-week.

The first outage originated at the Germany Substation, located near Route 97 and Miller Road outside Littlestown. Adams Electric Cooperative reported that a dropped power supply from Met-Ed caused the disruption. The hardest-hit areas from this outage include Littlestown Borough and Germany Township.

Monday evening brought another round of outages to over 5,000 more Met Ed customers in Northern Adams. The outage was accompanied by reports of a substation explosion and fire near Gardners.

To assist affected residents, Met-Ed is providing free ice and water at three area Giant stores. Customers may receive two 10-pound bags of ice and two 1-gallon jugs of water (or equivalent) by informing the cashier they are Met-Ed customers without power. Pickup is available at:

  • 44 Natural Springs Rd., Gettysburg (Adams County)
  • 455 Eisenhower Dr., Hanover (York County)
  • 801 Baltimore St., Hanover (York County)

A cooling center has also been established at 43 S. Columbus Avenue in Littlestown and will remain open until power is fully restored.

All residents, even those with restored power, are asked to reduce energy consumption during the heat wave. Residents are advised to raise their thermostats and avoid using major appliances until after 10 p.m.

Temperatures in the upper 90s with high humidity will continue tomorrow and Wednesday.
