Cooper Flagg goes No. 1 in 2025 NBA Draft as surprises shake up Round 1

The 2025 NBA Draft tipped off Wednesday night at Barclays Center with Duke star Cooper Flagg selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Mavericks, kicking off a night full of standout picks and unexpected moves.

Flagg was the first of three Duke players taken in the first round, joined by top-ranked center Khaman Maluach, who was drafted by the Phoenix Suns at No. 10. The Los Angeles Clippers closed out the night by selecting Swiss center Yanic Konan Niederhauser at No. 30.

Among the biggest surprises was the Utah Jazz taking Rutgers guard Ace Bailey at No. 5, shaking up mock drafts and giving Utah a high-upside scorer to build around.

The Miami Heat emerged as one of the clear winners, landing a potential franchise point guard who could pair well with their veteran core. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans made a bold move up the board to grab Indiana forward Derik Queen, raising questions about their long-term roster strategy.

Round 1 saw a mix of high-profile one-and-done college stars, international talent, and versatile role players go off the board as teams looked to fill critical needs and build for the future. With Round 2 set to begin Thursday night, eyes now turn to the remaining prospects hoping to hear their name called as the draft continues.
