Cumberland Township Plans Seasonal Maintenance Projects

The Cumberland Township Maintenance Department is preparing for the spring season by finishing up tree trimming, road sweeping, and preparing for surface treatments.

The tree trimming will take place in several areas throughout the township. This is an annual task that is usually conducted in the winter.

The township will also work with Gettysburg Boro and Mother Nature on street sweeping, which usually takes only a few weeks. Sweeping removes debris, such as anti-skid, leaves, and dirt, from the street and prevents debris from entering the stormwater collection system.

The township is also preparing for the paving season. Twin Lakes 1 and Lakeview Drive will be finished with paving this season. This project had been in the works for several summers and was completed with the help of neighboring municipalities, including Mt. Pleasant, Straban, and Franklin Township.

The development was prepared for paving over the last two summers by replacing and updating stormwater pipes and structures. This will be the first time since the mid-90s that any surface treatments have been done to this nearly forty-year-old development. The Preserves in Cumberland Village, Herrs Ridge Road, and Fairplay Roads will also be micro-surfaced this summer. This micro-surface product has been used by the township for many years and has been shown to extend the life of paved surfaces.

Routine tasks will also occur throughout the summer, including roadside mowing, which usually happens three times a season. The township is also planning to spray weeds along road signs, guide rails, bridge abutments, and rock swales to prevent vegetation from growing around these structures.

The maintenance department will also collect data to map various infrastructures in the township, including the stormwater collection system, road signs, roadway profiles, and guide rails. This data will be used to manage projects and mandates.
