December 1 at 12 and 7 pm – Great Art On Screen/Painting the Soul of the 20th Century: Pellizza Da Volpedo @ Majestic Theater                                                                                             

This docu-film tells the story of the tormented life of divisionist painter Giuseppe Pellizza (1868-1907), famous for his work “The Fourth Estate’ – housed today at the Galleria d ’Arte Moderna in Milan – as well as for his ability to study the soul and human activity.  Exploring the places he lived as well as his artistic sensitivity, with Fabrizio Bentivoglio as the guide and “narrative consciousness,” this documentary reveals the artist’s emotions and his vision of reality.   Tickets are $18 and $10 for students under age 25.    www.gettysburgmajestic.org

 Produced by Totem Pole Playhouse, this feel-good holiday event is perfect for families, date nights, and music lovers of all ages. December 3 – April 11 – “Images of Women in Art” Exhibit Opening @ Schmucker Art Gallery

Gallery Talks and Opening Reception for the new exhibit Images of Women in Art: Identity, Female Gaze, and Power take place on December 3 from 4-6 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.  The Gallery is generally open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am – 4 pm. www.gettysburg.edu/gallery

December 5 at 7 pm – Poetry First Friday/ Jeanne Griggs @ Ragged Edge Coffeehouse          

The poetry reading series takes place upstairs at the Ragged Edge Coffeehouse. Programs begin with an open mic followed by featured poet Jeanne Griggs. Ms. Griggs is a reader, writer, traveler, and ailurophile. She directs the Writing Center at Kenyon College, plays violin in the Knox County Symphony, and reviews books at Necromancy Never Pays. December 5 at 7 pm – Tuba Carol Fest  @ Lincoln Square                                                               

 Join the community outdoors at the Hotel Gettysburg after the tree lighting (6:30 pm) as we hear the beautiful sounds of low brass wafting over our downtown. The ensemble is under the direction of founder Ben Jones and admission is free. www.gettysburgbrassbandfestival.org

December 5 – 21 – Disney “Alice in Wonderland” @ Gettysburg Community Theatre      

When young Alice finds herself in a strange world where everything seems upside down, she must find her way home…and finds herself along the way. Based on the Disney animated and live action films, this stage musical version features plenty of fun songs. This is GCT’s Penguin Project production featuring actors with and without special needs together on stage in this 75-minute musical recommended for ages 4 and up. Dec. 5 at 7 pm & Dec. 6 at 3 pm  – Gettysburg Choral Society Christmas Concert @ ULS Chapel        

Under the direction of John McKay, The Gettysburg Choral Society will present a pair of concerts entitled “In Dulci Jubilo” (In Sweet Rejoicing). The chorus will perform timeless Christmas favorites such as “Carol of the Bells,” “Do You Hear What I Hear,” and more. Featuring soprano Amanda Peters, the program will include several recitatives and choruses from Handel’s “Messiah.”   Virtuoso organist Peggy Haas Howell will perform as well, and the program concludes with a joyous sing-along, accompanied by organ and chorus.  Admission and parking are free. December 5 at 8 pm – Gettysburg College Choir Concert @ Christ Chapel-Gettysburg College

December 13 and 14 at 3 pm – Gettysburg Civic Chorus Christmas Concert @ Gettysburg Area Middle School   

The Civic Chorus, under the direction of Guest Conductor Dave Conklin presents “Love Came Gently,” a holiday concert filled with songs of love, gentleness, and joy. The Chorus is joined by accompanist Esther Redding, musicians Dan White, Roger Sine, Bennett Sheahan, and Carol Garman, and vocal soloists to offer an afternoon of holiday magic. December 14 at 7 pm – A Christmas Offering Concert @ United Lutheran Seminary Chapel       

A variety of our favorite local performers including Wayne Hill – Baritone, and the Gettysburg Children’s Choir in a holiday sampler of Christmas delights! Admission and parking are free with a freewill offering collected.  www.musicgettysburg.org

December 19 and 20 – A Gettysburg Christmas(film) @ Majestic Theater                               

Filmed on location in Gettysburg, this story depicts Hope facing Christmas alone on her Gettysburg farm when her family pays an unwanted visit and her brother’s friend, Nick arrives. A stranger named Charley helps Hope find the joy of Christmas. Tickets are $9.   www.gettysburgmajestic.org

December 21 at 4 pm – Songs of Light and Wonder @ St. James Lutheran Church                

Enter the warmth and wonder of the holidays with shimmering choral works and festive favorites performed by the Master Singers of Virginia. From the radiant beauty of Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Arumque”and “Glow,” to the glorious “Jesu Carols” by Stephen Paulus with harp accompaniment, this program celebrates light born in darkness and the joy of the season. Admission is free.

December 31 from 7 – 10 pm – New Year’s Eve Open House @ Christ Lutheran Church        

Since 2001, Christ Lutheran has opened their doors to welcome all for free entertainment, free refreshments and fellowship that is all family-friendly.  In the Nave (upstairs) entertainment begins at 7 pm with John Wolfe, Magician; at 8 pm jazz quartet “Just Friends” with Lisa Cordiano – vocals, Bret Crawford – saxophones, Wayne Fox, piano, and Buzz Jones, bass; at 9 pm the Elkiss Duo featuring Cathy Elkiss, piano and Dale Elkiss, violin, will perform classical music and beautiful melodies of the season. At 9:40 pm is a Candlelight Worship Service, led by Nancy Gable. Downstairs in the Social Hall are free refreshments, face-painting, coloring, board games, and a place to warm up and chat with your friends.    www.christgettysburg.org

Gail Jones has enjoyed a twenty-five-year career as a music educator in Pennsylvania and Maryland public schools as well as teaching music education methods at Gettysburg College for over a decade. She has also served as a guest conductor, French horn player, and private music instructor. Gail has a deep appreciation for live music performances of all genres and encourages Adams County residents to attend the many concerts offered in our community.
