In a closely contested softball game on Tuesday, April 11, Delone Catholic emerged victorious over Gettysburg, 4-3, on the Warriors’ field.
Delone Catholic took the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs thanks to the batting prowess of Teagan Funkhouser, who managed a triple and drove in two runs. Caylee Zortman also contributed with a double, giving Delone Catholic a solid 4-0 cushion. Or so it appeared.
Gettysburg came alive In the fifth inning. Kate Keller knocked in the first run with a single, and Emmaleigh Gillingham followed with a double, driving in another. Finally, Adalyn Smarsh brought in the third run with a groundout, closing the gap to just one run at 4-3.
Despite their best efforts, Gettysburg was unable to score any more runs in the remaining innings. Delone pitcher Amy Anderson held her ground and went the distance, completing the game with eight strikeouts, one walk, and only allowing four hits and three earned runs. She threw 110 pitches. The Squirettes committed one error in support of their starter, thought it resulted in an unearned run.
On the other hand, Gettysburg starter Megan Musselman gave up four runs, only one of them earned as the Warriors committed three costly errors. Danika Kump came on in relief, tossing the final 5.2 innings for Gettysburg. Both teams collected just four hits on the afternoon.
In the end, Delone Catholic’s strong start and Gettysburg’s late rally made for an exciting and competitive game, with defense playing a pivotal role.
