Michael Dickerson has resigned from the Gettysburg Area School District Board of Directors, leaving the district seeking a replacement to fill the remainder of his term.
The resignation is effective immediately, according to a district statement. Dickerson’s elected term had been scheduled to run through 2027.
Dickerson, a 1993 Gettysburg Area High School graduate, joined the board in 2019 and was elected to a second term in 2023. He has lived in Adams County since 1991.
During his time on the board, Dickerson served in leadership positions, including as vice president. He and then-President Kenny Hassinger were reelected to their leadership posts in December 2024. Following the 2025 election, Alice Broadway became president and Al Moyer vice president.
Dickerson’s tenure included a period of significant debate over district finances, facilities and the future of the Adams County Technical Institute.
In June, Dickerson joined a 6-3 majority approving a 3.5% property tax increase for the 2026-27 school year. The district said 2.5% of the increase would support the general operating budget, while 1% would be directed toward a future land purchase and construction costs for ACTI.
Later that month, however, Dickerson was among four board members who opposed a proposed $1.7 million ACTI property purchase at 6298 York Road. That proposal failed 3-4.
When running for reelection in 2023, Dickerson said one of the district’s central challenges was balancing the burden on taxpayers with the need to adequately fund public education. He said he viewed students, teachers, staff, administrators, taxpayers and district residents collectively as his constituents.
The vacancy leaves the remaining board members responsible for selecting a successor to serve on the nine-member board.
