Dickinson stifles Gettysburg in lacrosse showdown

Dickinson ranked ninth in the latest USILA Div. III coaches’ poll held sixth-ranked Gettysburg to a season-low seven goals for a 12-7 win in a top-10 men’s lacrosse showdown Wednesday afternoon in Gettysburg.

It took more than 11 minutes before either team could break down the defense. Charlie Baughan finally broke through, finishing a feed from Sascha Gannon with 3:45 to play in the first quarter. Gettysburg responded with an Ethan Kessler (Ridgefield, Conn./Millbrook School)man-up tally with 88 seconds left in the first quarter, tying the game at 1-all.

Will Farrell finished a solo run just 1:57 into the second quarter to put the visitors back in front by one. Ryan Cernuto (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) tied the game once again with 8:40 on the clock off the first of Kyle Howard’s assists. Owen Porter cashed in on a man-up opportunity just over two minutes later to start a three-goal run by three different goal-scorers that gave Dickinson a 5-2 lead with 4:17 to play. Gettysburg, however, found the back of the net twice in the final 1:24 of the half to close to within one at the break. Kieran Ward (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep) finished a solo run then Howard scored from Kessler on the break in the waning seconds of the half. Porter and Jack Murphy pushed the lead back to three with goals 1 minute and 45 seconds apart. Murphy’s man-up tally came with 9:19 to play, and the defenses took over for the rest of the quarter.

Aidan Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) finished a skip pass from Howard with 12:56 remaining, but the Red Devils reeled off the next four to take an 11-5 lead with 6:21 to play. Porter capped the run with his third tally of the day. Howard broke up the run with 2:27 to play before Gannon and Kessler traded markers in the final 1:37.

For Dickinson, Chris Brandau made 17 saves in the cage to backstop a defense that shut down an offense that was averaging 14.6 goals per game. Owen Porter led the attack with three goals.

Dickinson finished with a 43-38 advantage in shots and won 14 of 23 faceoffs. Andy Marquet (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) picked up six ground balls to lead the Bullets.

Gettysburg will now need a victory in its season finale to assure itself a first-round bye in the new five-team conference tournament and will conclude the regular season at home Saturday afternoon against Washington (Md.) Game time is 1 p.m.
