Digestible Paper Battery Could Power Swallowable Medical Devices

Researchers have developed a biodegradable paper battery designed to power electronic medical devices inside the body and then break down after its work is finished.

The battery, made with a material resembling edible rice paper, has been tested in pigs. Researchers envision the technology eventually powering swallowable devices that monitor health or deliver treatment without requiring a later procedure to remove the power source.

The technology remains experimental and has not yet been demonstrated for routine use in people.
