Recent sightings of mysterious drones over New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania have left residents puzzled and anxious, prompting federal officials to investigate. Reports of drones streaking across nighttime skies have flooded authorities since mid-November, with as many as 180 sightings in a single night, according to state officials.
The federal government initially suggested some sightings might be misidentified manned aircraft or other lawful operations. However, Homeland Security officials later confirmed that at least some of the objects are indeed drones. The Department of Homeland Security has deployed additional resources, personnel, and technology to assist local authorities in addressing the phenomenon.

The sudden surge in drone activity has spurred theories ranging from surveillance to foreign interference. While no evidence links the drones to malicious intent, state officials, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, have pressed for answers. Murphy called the lack of information “frustrating” and demanded increased federal support in a letter to President Biden.
Experts suggest that changes to federal aviation rules in 2023, which now permit nighttime drone operations, may partially explain the rise in sightings. Federal authorities have urged Congress to grant state and local governments expanded authority to counter drone activity under federal oversight.
