Join the Eisenhower Society on Saturday, October 12 for the 55th commemoration of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s birth. At 12 Noon the Society will hold a short program and a wreath laying at the Eisenhower statue outside the Eisenhower House, President Eisenhower’s retirement office at 300 Carlisle Street, Gettysburg.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Scholarships will be awarded to four well-deserving Gettysburg College students. These scholarships are funded by the Eisenhower Memorial Endowment and the Robert M. Hoffman Trust. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Society ROTC Leadership Award will also be presented to an outstanding Gettysburg College member of the Blue Mountain Battalion of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The playing of “Taps” will conclude the twenty-minute program. Attendance at the wreath laying is open to the public and free of charge.

Following the wreath laying, join the Eisenhower Society at 1 p.m. for a buffet luncheon at the Historic Dobbin House, 89 Steinwehr Avenue, Gettysburg. The buffet menu includes Chicken Coq Au Vin, Baked Ham with Pineapple Raisin Sauce, and Penne Pasta and Tomato Sauce. Vegetables include Rice Pilaf, Oven Roasted Potatoes, Buttered Dilled Carrots, and Green Beans Almondine. A 25-item salad bar, fresh baked breads, and desserts including Fudge Brownies, Blueberry Trifle, Gingerbread with Lemon Sauce, and Colonial Pudding Cake will also be available. Advance ticket purchase is required. The last day to order is October 7 by 12 Noon.
The luncheon speaker this year is Eisenhower Society Trustee Paul M. Shevchuk. Mr. Shevchuk’s program is entitled “The Courtship of Ike and Mamie,” and will explore never published details of the couple’s whirlwind romance during 1915-1916. As a young Second Lieutenant, Eisenhower first met eighteen-year-old Mamie Geneva Doud by chance while engaged in his first posting with the Nineteenth U.S. Infantry at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas.
Luncheon tickets are $35 per person or $200 for a group of six reserved seats. Reservations are available online at dwightdeisenhowersociety.org until Monday, October 7 or sooner if sold out. Information about registering by mail is also available on the website.
