Emergency Street Closure – 500 Block of Baltimore Street – Fatal Car Wreck Displaces Multiple Residents

First responders remain on the scene of a fatal car crash that occurred at approximately 3:30 AM, March 1, 2021. Multiple buildings erupted in flames after the car exploded and caught fire. The residents of the buildings escaped with the assistance of fire fighters. No resident injuries have been reported. The Red Cross is assisting the residents with temporary shelter.

Utility crews (Columbia Gas, Met-Ed Power, and Gettysburg Municipal Authority) are in the process of turning off all utilities to the three involved structures. Structural Engineers and Borough Code officials continue to evaluate the stability of the structures. Demolition of one structure must occur before the the 500 block of Baltimore Street is reopened.

The 500 Block of Baltimore Street will remain closed through at least 8:00 PM. The sidewalk and parking spaces immediately adjacent to the impacted buildings will remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians until further notice, even after the roadway is reopened.

Gettysburg Borough would like to thank the multiple fire, police, and EMS agencies who responded to and assisted with this morning’s incident.
