NAMI Central PA is expanding its free educational programs and support groups this fall, offering resources for both individuals living with mental health conditions and the families who support them.
The nonprofit chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness announced a slate of evidence-based courses beginning this September, all designed to reduce isolation, build skills, and foster resilience. The sessions are led by trained volunteers who share their own lived experiences with mental health challenges.
One of the flagship offerings, Family-to-Family, is an eight-session course for relatives, partners, and close friends of people living with mental illness. Participants will learn communication techniques, problem-solving strategies, and ways to practice self-care, along with guidance on how to advocate effectively for loved ones navigating the mental health system.
For adults managing their own conditions, Peer-to-Peer provides a similar eight-session series. The program emphasizes coping strategies, resilience-building, and empowerment in a supportive, confidential environment.
Two ongoing support group options are also available. The Connections Support Group meets weekly for individuals living with a mental health condition, creating a judgment-free space to share experiences and encouragement. The Family Support Group, which meets monthly, is geared toward family members and caregivers who often face unique stresses while supporting loved ones.
All programs are offered at no cost, though advance registration is required. NAMI Central PA expects to provide both in-person and virtual options to ensure broad accessibility across the region.
Organizers say the fall schedule reflects NAMI’s core mission: ensuring that no one feels alone in facing mental health struggles. The combination of structured education and peer support aims to help participants not only manage immediate challenges but also build long-term confidence and community.
