Extra Apples Put To Good Use: State Program Is Announced At Knouse

The Shapiro Administration has unveiled a significant $3 million investment to combat hunger, minimize food waste, and bolster Pennsylvania’s apple growers. At an event held at Knouse Foods in Adams County, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, and Feeding Pennsylvania CEO Julie Bancroft highlighted how this initiative is transforming surplus state apples into nutritious products for those in need.

This investment includes $1 million from the Pennsylvania Agricultural Surplus System (PASS) and an additional $2 million in federal funds. The program is a boon for local apple producers who face the risk of wasting excess crops. Instead, these apples are now being processed into apple sauce and juice and distributed to hungry families across Pennsylvania through Feeding Pennsylvania’s extensive network of food banks and pantries.

“Pennsylvania’s apple industry is thriving, and this initiative exemplifies our commitment to ensuring that no good food goes to waste while addressing food insecurity,” stated Secretary Redding. The PASS program, known for reimbursing the costs associated with handling surplus food, has been a critical component in this effort, distributing millions of pounds of food annually.

Feeding Pennsylvania, a pivotal player in this collaboration has seen apples become a top fresh fruit choice in the PASS program. The state, a leading apple producer nationally, finds a strong ally in Knouse Foods, a major processor committed to supporting this cause.

Beyond addressing immediate hunger, this initiative also extends to schools. With the Shapiro Administration’s focus on universal free breakfast, Pennsylvania students will enjoy local apples as part of their nutritious meals, further supporting local agriculture and healthy eating habits.

This investment is part of Governor Shapiro’s broader strategy to enhance Pennsylvania’s agriculture sector, a critical component of the state’s economy, and ensure food security for all residents. It emphasizes the administration’s dedication to both agricultural prosperity and community well-being.
