February 1 – April 11 – Schmucker Art Gallery Exhibits @ Gettysburg College – Schmucker Hall

Curated by college students under the direction of Professor Yan Sun – Images of Women in Art: Identity, Female Gaze, and Power – features prints, paintings, carvings, and photography of women artists from the East and West. In the Main Gallery, an exhibit from the Historic Woodstock Art Colony celebrates the work of 50 women artists who were active in the art colony from the early 20th century through the 1970’s. In addition, an international college student from Bangladesh reimagines her beloved rickshaw art within the American cultural landscape. sunderman wind quintet

February 2 at 3 pm – Sunderman Wind Quintet @ Musselman Library, Gettysburg College

The faculty woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) will present a concert in the apse of the college library. Admission is free. www.gettysburgcollege/sunderman

February 3 at 7:30 pm – Martha Graham Dance Company: A Dual Centennial Event @ Gettysburg Majestic Theater

Martha Graham Dance Company is the oldest dance company in America and has been a leader in evolving contemporary dance since its founding in 1926. This program features iconic works of Graham’s company alongside newly commissioned dances by some of the most dynamic choreographers working today. Tony-Award winner John Rubinstein returns to the Majestic to narrate the iconic Appalachian Spring and perform Bernstein’s Simple Song. February 6 from 5-7 pm – New Art Exhibits Reception @ Adams County Arts Council

This month’s exhibits include Gettysburg Elementary School students, an All-County Art Show, and ACAC Instructors Show. Stop in to enjoy the new art exhibits, talk with the artists, and enjoy some free munchies. Admission is free. www.adamsarts.org

February 6 at 7 pm – Poetry First Friday @ Ragged Edge Coffeehouse

February 6 at 8:00 pm – Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Marc-Andre Hamelin, Piano @ Gettysburg Majestic Theater

Grammy-Award winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra returns to the Majestic to join virtuoso performer and composer Marc-Andre Hamelin in performing arrangements for piano and orchestra, including Liszt’s Wanderer Fantasy, Schubert’s Symphony in B-flat Major, Beethoven’s “Allegretto” from Piano Sonata No. 17, and Hamelin’s Passacaglia for piano and strings. February 13 at 7:30 pm – Brass of Peace Concert @ Schmucker Hall, Gettysburg College

February 15 at 3:00 pm – Wind Symphony Annual Family Pops Concert @ Majestic Theater

Bring the whole family together for a fun afternoon filled with music! The Wind Symphony, the premier wind and percussion ensemble of the Sunderman Conservatory, is under the direction of Dr. Russell McCutcheon. February 16 at 12 and 7 pm – Exhibition on Screen: Caravaggio @ Majestic Theater

Mystery, intrigue, beauty, passion, murder – shine a new light on Caravaggio in this dramatic biography. Caravaggio’s masterpieces are some of art’s most instantly recognizable and this extensive film, five years in the making, reveals Caravaggio as never before. February 19 at 7:00 pm – Stuart Malina and Friends @ United Lutheran Seminary Chapel

Music, Gettysburg! presents the Tony-award winning music director of the Harrisburg Symphony, pianist Stuart Malina plus the HSO’s principal winds for a colorful and uplifting program of music by Prokofiev, Poulenc, Stephen Sondheim, and Gettysburg’s own Avner Dorman. February 20 – March 8 – We the People, the Musical @ Gettysburg Community Theatre

There is no better way to celebrate America than with beautiful, patriotic music – from America’s favorite anthems to poignant and uplifting original compositions. We the People serves as a poignant reminder that the remarkable words written many years ago are still a living document, part of our lives each day. February 21 at 8:00 pm – Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble @ Majestic Theater

Under the direction of Dr. Amanda Heim, the Jazz Ensemble presents their winter jazz concert with the theme “Band’s Choice.” They will play favorite tunes and arrangements chosen by members of the ensemble including compositions by Thad Jones, Tito Puente, Skyler Tang, Maynard Ferguson, and Stan Kenton, among others. February 23 at 12 and 7 pm – National Theatre Live: The Fifth Step @ Majestic Theater

February 26 – 28 at 7:30 pm – Twin Hearts, A World Premiere @ Kline Theatre, Gettysburg College

February 27 at 8:00 pm – Sunderman Conservatory Symphony Orchestra Concert @ Majestic

Gail Jones

Gail Jones has enjoyed a twenty-five-year career as a music educator in Pennsylvania and Maryland public schools as well as teaching music education methods at Gettysburg College for over a decade. She has also served as a guest conductor, French horn player, and private music instructor. Gail has a deep appreciation for live music performances of all genres and encourages Adams County residents to attend the many concerts offered in our community.
