Gettysburg’s Lincoln Square will once again come alive with the sound of flutes this Independence Day as “Flutes on the Fourth” returns for its annual patriotic performance.
The event was the brainchild of LeeAnn Baird, who developed the idea after watching her husband participate in Gettysburg’s Annual Tuba Carol Fest, where tuba players gather each December to play Christmas music on the steps of the Gettysburg Hotel. Inspired by that event, Baird envisioned a similar platform for flute players. She partnered with Edie Rice to help bring the musical side of the idea to life, and together they launched the first “Flutes on the Fourth” on July 4, 2022.

While Baird focuses on behind-the-scenes organization, Rice manages the musical direction. A friend of Rice arranges all the music for the event, which features a six-part flute choir. Baird explained, “They are Civil War era songs, not your run of the mill versions of the songs. The harmonies are intense and all parts share the melody, making each part fun to play.”
The song selection stays largely the same from year to year, which helps participants prepare in advance, as the group meets only once—an hour before the performance—to rehearse. Players practice the music individually throughout the year.
Baird adds a fun and creative element to the event with a variety of incentives and awards. In previous years, prizes have been given to the fourth and 44th people to register, the person who traveled the farthest, and those with the best Civil War costume or the most patriotic outfit. Trophies—patriotic gnomes holding flutes—are handmade by a friend.
This year, a new addition to the event is the opportunity to purchase merchandise on Amazon. “Rice and Baird have partnered with a gifted artist who has created a 2025 logo and sells tee shirts and tote bags.” Information about registration and merchandise is available on the Flutes on the 4th Facebook page.
Flute players of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Beginner-level student music is available. Last year’s performance featured 68 flutists and attracted a large crowd. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the Gettysburg Hotel Ballroom.
“Come hear the inspiring music on July 4, 2025 from 10:00 – 10:30 AM! It’s the perfect way to start your holiday! Cheers to our freedom! See you there.”
