From the Director: Spring GARA Newsletter

Greetings all on behalf of the GARA board and staff. We are coming off an amazing year that has included some significant improvements here at the park. The community has really stepped up and assisted us with numerous projects. Here are a few of the updates: Rrepaired stadium lights; Refurbished benches and picnic tables; Newly installed playground; Rewired fireman’s pavilion). We still have much work to do but appreciate all the progress made.

Here are some of the groups we would like to thank for making this all happen: Guys Gettysburg College Lacrosse team; Gettysburg H.S. guys and girls wrestling teams; Adams County Trades Class and instructor Dave Snyder; Master Electrician Mike Carter; Gettysburg College Facilities Dept. and others.

We also are pleased to announce we received an award from the South Central Community Media Organization as their “Rising Impact Award” for 2025. It feels great to be appreciated.

One of several projects we have slated for the 2026-2027 year will be the improvements to our ball fields for the Gettysburg Little League (GLL) and the other youth sports we host on the campus. More specifically, we plan to improve the grit on the infields of the baseball areas and aerate and over-seed the grassy areas improving the turf as well. We have asked the GLL parents and coaches to step up and assist more with field preparation and many have gone through the training to make that happen.

We are also partnering with VIDA Charter School’s after school club to create a mural on the amphitheater back wall replacing the old mosaic that was there for several decades.

Collaborating For Youth will be holding several weeks of summer camps to youngsters FREE of charge during the June and July summer months.  More to come later.

Finally, we are planning for the 2nd Annual Summerfest Music Festival to be held the on Saturday May 23. The music lineup has not yet been announced, but proceeds will benefit the Gettysburg Skate Park.

The July 4th/250 birthday of our country is also on the schedule with an extended fireworks display.

You will NOT want to miss these amazing events.

On behalf of the team at the Rec Park, we wish everyone a great spring and summer!

Respectfully submitted by Dr. Al Moyer, GARA Executive Director
