GARA is gearing up for spring

Greetings from the Rec Park/GARA!  I don’t know about you all, but I have frankly had enough of winter already. Very soon, we will be into March, and we’re gearing up for the spring and summer here at the rec park.  I want to take this opportunity to share a few, but not all-inclusive listing, of some of the planned activities here at the park:

  • The Farmers Market will be back at the park starting in April. The market continues to grow and I understand they will have even more vendors than in the past.
  • Club soccer will conduct many of its practices and programs starting in mid-March, depending on the weather. You will see them mostly in the North part of the campus at the intersection of Breckenridge and Long Lane.
  • The south end of the park will receive a new look, with 30 new trees being installed by the borough team this spring. The trees are being donated in honor of Ms. Jane Scott, who passed away; she was passionate about green spaces.
  • World Classrooms will be returning to the park with over 100 visits scheduled. These individuals (mostly secondary students and advisors) are mostly from the mid-western part of the country, and they conduct historical trips. Most of the groups visit Washington, DC, and Gettysburg. Lectures and lunchtime relaxation are conducted here at the park.
  • Youth baseball will be starting soon and we plan to host a couple of baseball tournaments.
  • Collaborating for Youth will be conducting six weeks of summer camps here at the park this summer. We are excited to be hosting these camps, which will focus on academics and much more. Literacy acquisition, math, and STEM activities are also planned. The camps are sponsored by grants and will be free to families. We will share more closer to the time.

There is much more to share, but that’s enough for now. Please remember that our assembly hall in the Charlie Sterner building is open for celebrations and can be rented at a very reasonable rate.  We appreciate your consideration, and we can be contacted at 717.334.2028 or by emailing me at director@gettysburgrecpark.com. We hope to see you soon!
