GARA prepares for summer

The Gettysburg Area Recreational Authority (GARA) board of directors reported solid financial footing and a slate of improvements and events as it prepares for a busy summer season, including a major July 4 celebration expected to draw thousands from around the east coast.

Through March, the board reported year-to-date income of $86,213 and expenses of $69,748, leaving a net surplus of $16,465. Total assets stand at $91,384, up significantly from about $55,000 at the same time last year. Officials said additional annual funding from Gettysburg Borough and Cumberland Township are still pending, further strengthening the financial outlook.

GARA Executive Director Al Moyer said the tighter spending controls devloped over the past year had improved the financial situation, and noted increased interest earnings through new banking arrangements and certificates of deposit.

Maintenance updates highlighted several ongoing and completed projects, including repointing work at the bandstand, electrical upgrades totaling about $3,800, and repainting and reinforcing bleachers. An anonymous donor provided a 500-gallon diesel fuel tank, allowing the park to purchase and store fuel expected to last through the summer.

Board members also approved the purchase of expandable security gates for the bandstand to protect a planned mural and other recent improvements. Additional equipment purchases included a projector to support community programming and training events.

Looking ahead, the board discussed a series of upcoming events, including the second annual Summerfest Music Festival on May 23 featuring six performers and more than a dozen food and alcohol vendors. Organizers reported more than $2,800 in sponsorships so far, with participation continuing to grow.

Planning is also underway for a massive July 4 celebration, with performances scheduled throughout the day, including the 90-member U.S. Army band. Board members anticipate attendance between 15,000 and 20,000 people. The event will include expanded food vendor participation, an extended fireworks display, and coordination with local police agencies for security.

Other ongoing initiatives include exploring the addition of pickleball courts, pursuing grants for a new defibrillator, and improving infrastructure such as electrical access and cable safety at the park.

The board also discussed maintaining flexibility with signage used by local youth sports organizations, acknowledging its importance as a revenue source for those programs while considering future guidelines.

The next meeting date, normally the 4th Monday in the month, may be adjusted due to the Memorial Day holiday schedule.
