GASD faculty basketball game set Feb. 26 to benefit GAMS Mini-THON

Gettysburg Area Middle School (GAMS) is holding an exciting basketball game on February 26, featuring its secondary teachers facing off against elementary teachers to benefit its Mini-THON fundraiser.

The special event, with all proceeds benefiting Four Diamonds in their mission to conquer childhood cancer, has tip-off at 6 p.m., and doors opening at 5:30 p.m. at the Gettysburg Area High School Gymnasium, 1130 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg.

GAMS Mini-THON advisors Dana Hassinger and Sherri Yingling came up with GAMS Mini-THON Basketball Events “to raise awareness and participation involving different age groups.”

“The faculty basketball game would provide entertainment, but also highlight the importance of the school communities coming together to support such an important cause,” Hassinger said. “Our goal is to get the elementary school involved to spark interests in the students for when they enter middle school and high school. This way, they become familiar with Mini-THON and are more likely to get involved when they get older.”

Hassinger pointed out many people have been affected by cancer in some way, “so this hits home for a lot of families,” she said.

“It is very rewarding at the end-of-the-year reveal to see all the hard work and dedication pay off,” Hassinger said.

GAMS sixth-grader Sophie Biggins said people should come to the faculty basketball game “to have fun with their friends and to help support kids with childhood cancer.”

“Every dollar you donate helps kids and supports our Mini-THON club,” Biggins said.

The public is welcome to attend with admission at $3 for students and $5 for adults.

White pom-poms will be sold to cheer on teachers: one for $3 or two for $5, while Mini-THON foam glow sticks will be available for $5 each. The event will have concessions as well as halftime activities that include fun games and prizes.

Biggins recognized the significance of the mission behind Mini-THON events.

“It means we get to give back to children who have cancer and help parents pay for their treatments,” she said.

The GAMS Mini-THON has a goal to raise $18,000 this year for the cause. Those who are unable to make it to the event and are interested in contributing to the GAMS Mini-THON can donate here: https://gasd-pa.org/GAMSMiniThon25.
