Gettysburg Area High School World Language Department Earns PSMLA Silver Globe Award

The Gettysburg Area High School (GAHS) World Language Department has earned the prestigious 2026-2028 Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association (PSMLA) Exemplary Program (PEP) Silver Globe Award, recognizing excellence in world language education and student achievement.

The Silver Globe Award is presented to schools that demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality language instruction through rigorous coursework, student engagement, professional development, cultural experiences, and proficiency-based learning practices.

GAHS has earned the distinction by offering comprehensive language programs in French, German, and Spanish, maintaining strong student enrollment and retention through advanced levels, providing Advanced Placement (AP) opportunities, and implementing standards-based performance assessments aligned with national proficiency standards.

More than 41 percent of GAHS students are currently enrolled in a world language course, and 53 percent of students who begin language study in ninth grade continue through level 4 or higher. The district also offers extended language pathways beginning in middle school and culminating in advanced coursework, including AP courses.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our students and teachers, who understand that language learning is about much more than vocabulary and grammar,” said Ryan Trone, GAHS French teacher and World Language Department head. “Our goal is to help students become global citizens. We, as teachers, create opportunities for students to use language in meaningful ways, build connections across cultures, and gain skills that will benefit them long after graduation.”

The department’s commitment to excellence goes beyond the classroom with students having opportunities to participate in international travel experiences, earn the Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy, and engage in cultural organizations and community events. French, German, and Latinx clubs regularly connect students with the community through activities such as Salsa on the Square, Mini-THON, and the Gettysburg Holiday Market.

According to PSMLA criteria, the award also recognized departments that support ongoing professional growth. All Gettysburg Area School District world language teachers participate in professional development opportunities and maintain memberships in professional language organizations.

“Receiving the PSMLA Silver Globe Award is a testament to the exceptional work of our World Language Department and the value our students place on language learning,” GAHS Principal Jeremy Lusk said. “The ability to communicate across cultures is one of the most important skills students can develop in today’s interconnected world. We are incredibly proud of our educators for creating engaging, rigorous learning experiences that prepare our students for success both locally and globally.”

The PSMLA Exemplary Program designation recognizes schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in world language education and a sustained commitment to preparing students for meaningful participation in a multilingual and multicultural society.
