The Gettysburg Area School District will be seeking a new superintendent in 2025. During their meeting on Monday, the board unanimously approved Dr. Jason Perrin’s retirement effective Sept. 27, 2025.
Perrin joined the district staff in 2017, replacing Superintendent Dr. Larry Redding. The board renewed his contract in 2020.

“I want to acknowledge everything he has done for the district and that he will continue to do for the remainder of this year and most of 2025,” Board President Kenny Hassinger said.
Board reorganization
The board held its annual reorganization meeting prior to its regular meeting. Hassinger and Michael Dickerson were again named president and vice president, respectively. The pair were elected 8-1 in separate votes, with Michelle Smyers opposing each time.
The board also named the Gettysburg Times and the Gettysburg Connection its newspapers of record. Al Moyer will serve as the board’s representative to the Pennsylvania School Boards Association and Jeremy Davis will be the representative to the Adams County Career Technical Institute’s Joint Operating Committee.
Public comment
The board is continuing its search for an assistant high school principal, and some members of the public are not happy with the process. The position opened when former Assistant Principal Kristy Caywood was hired as Middle School principal.
During public comment, Justine Sieg criticized the board for not choosing a candidate after four rounds of interviews. Sieg also said the candidate waited two weeks for a decision from the board.
Sieg did not name the candidate but touted their 22 years of experience in education, 17 of which were spent at Gettysburg. The candidate, Sieg said, served in numerous leadership roles, including department head, Advance Placement courses teacher, club advisor, mentor teacher, and dean of students.
“I had the privilege of working alongside this candidate for 12 years and can attest that their passion and dedication to the students of Gettysburg Area High School is exceptional in today’s world,” Sieg said.
Parent Siri Phelps echoed Sieg’s comments.
“I really think this person has shown that they are dedicated to our students, our faculty, our community,” Phelps said.
Hassinger told Sieg and Phelps that hiring decisions are confidential, so he could not comment on why the board denied the candidate the job. Dickerson criticized the candidate for sharing their experience about the hiring process with members of the public.
“It is deeply troubling and extremely inappropriate that the names of candidates that applied for this position were leaked to the public,” Dickerson said.
Board member Alice Broadway said board members must keep information about the hiring process confidential but that requirement does not extend to candidates.
The assistant principal position is posted on the district’s website.
