Gettysburg Borough and Cumberland Township Renew Police Regionalization Discussions

The Cumberland Township Supervisors and Gettysburg’s Mayor and Borough Council met in executive session on October 16 to discuss police regionalization.  The managers of the two municipalities will work together on a Request for Proposal (RFP) to update the 2013 Regional Police Study that was conducted by the Pennsylvania Governor’s Center for Local Government Services.  “The updated study will build on the good work completed in 2013 and will address some items that were not covered in the 2013 study,” said Susan Naugle, Gettysburg Borough Council president.

The RFP will be submitted to law enforcement consulting professionals and then reviewed in 2020.  Both municipalities have committed to budgeting for the study in their respective 2020 budgets. Once the RFPs are received, the elected officials of the two municipalities will decide whether to proceed with updating the 2013 Study.

If the Study is authorized there is no timeline to make any final decisions. “If we decide to move in the direction of police regionalization, it will be a multi-year planning effort”, said Barbara Underwood, chairwoman of the Cumberland Township Board of Supervisors.
