Gettysburg College Trustee Resigns as a result of Nazi photo

Bob Garthwait, a 1982 graduate of Gettysburg College, has resigned his position on the College Board of Trustees, apparently because he wore an offensive costume at a party during his sophomore year.

Garthwait wore the Nazi soldier costume while attending a fraternity theme party where attendees dressed like characters from the TV show “Hogan’s Heroes.” The photo was published in the 1980 class yearbook.

“I understand how disturbing this image is to members of the Gettysburg College community, and especially those who are Jewish. As a sophomore in 1980, I was not fully aware of the significance of those symbols,” Garthwait said. “While this is no excuse, I am deeply embarrassed and regret participating in this event where Nazi symbols were used.”
