Gettysburg College Will Present Two Honorary Degrees

Gettysburg College will confer honorary degrees on two distinguished alumnae at its 2025 Commencement ceremony, recognizing their exceptional achievements in music and athletics. Elizabeth Anderson, Class of 1982, will receive a Doctor of Music for her influential work in electroacoustic composition. Carol Daly Cantele, Class of 1983, P’15, will be awarded a Doctor of Science in Physical Education in honor of her legendary coaching career and leadership in collegiate athletics.

Anderson is an internationally renowned composer and scholar whose innovative works have been performed globally for over 30 years. She has earned numerous accolades and commissions from major cultural institutions across Europe and the Americas, while also advancing the field through her research and educational contributions. A professor in Belgium, Anderson’s work continues to shape the future of contemporary sound art.

Cantele, one of the most successful coaches in NCAA Division III history, led Gettysburg’s women’s lacrosse team to three national championships and 13 conference titles over a storied three-decade career. Inducted into multiple halls of fame, she is also known for her mentorship and impact on generations of student-athletes. In addition to receiving an honorary degree, she will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Commencement.

The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. on the Beachem Portico.
