The Gettysburg Fire Department will open its doors to the community this Saturday, October 4, 2025, with a free Open House designed to promote fire prevention and family safety.
The event, held at 35 North Stratton Street, runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offers interactive activities for all ages. Children and teens can participate in the “Fire Prevention Passport to Safety” program by collecting stamps at various safety stations. Completing nine stamps qualifies participants for prize drawings of $50, $30, and $20, with separate age groups for children in grades K through 3 and students in grades 4 through 12.
Passport stations will include a wide variety of educational and hands-on exhibits, such as calling 911, stop/drop/roll, fire hose activities, smoke alarm and home fire drill planning, and kitchen safety. Local organizations will also be on site, including the Gettysburg Police, Red Cross, Safe Kids Coalition, Columbia Gas, and Cumberland Township Police. Demonstrations will also cover lithium-ion battery hazards, HAM radio use, and PennDOT’s “Move Over” safety program.
Special features include the Fire Safety Trailer, a fire extinguisher demonstration by Gettysburg College, and a campfire and wildfire safety program presented by the Pennsylvania DCNR Forestry Department. At 11 a.m., children will have the opportunity to meet Smokey Bear, and at noon, attendees can witness the arrival of the Wellflight medical helicopter.
Additionally, the department’s Fire Museum will be open, allowing guests to explore exhibits while enjoying food and various activities.
