A win so nice, it happened twice. Sophomore Johnny Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) and junior Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) each won in three sets in singles action to rally the Gettysburg College men’s tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Dickinson College for the second consecutive season in 2011.

McLaughlin clinches come-from-behind 5-4 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Facing match point, junior Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) reeled off the final five points to win his singles match and help Gettysburg come from behind to beat Dickinson for the second consecutive year in Centennial Conference men’s tennis action on Wednesday night.

Nearly one year ago, Gettysburg (6-3, 2-3 CC) trailed Dickinson (6-5, 2-3 CC) 4-3 with two singles matches remaining. In that match, 2010 graduate Dale Beshore pulled off five-straight points to win his second singles flight in three sets before current junior Sebastian Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano West) polished off the 5-4 win with a three-set decision at the fifth flight.

McLaughlin did his best Beshore imitation at No. 2 with Will Golinkin, who was also victimized in last season’s affair. The Bullet junior knocked out a 6-4 opening-set win before Golinkin won handily 6-1 in the second frame. The Red Devils’ No. 2 player jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the final set, but with darkness starting to creep onto the court, McLaughlin got hot and battled back with the next five points to clinch the win for Gettysburg.

Before McLaughlin pulled off his heroics, sophomore Johnny Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio/West Holmes) had to post a comeback of his own at the sixth position with Gettysburg trailing 4-3 in the match. Nelson rebounded from a 6-2 setback in the first set to handily win the final two 6-3 and 6-1.

Gettysburg was in a good position early as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tandems each won. Freshman Tom Gosnell (Bronxville, N.Y./Episcopal (Va.)) and senior Will Brinks (Havertown, Pa./Episcopal Academy) won 8-4 at the second flight, while McLaughlin and Nelson improved to 9-3 on the year with an 8-5 win at No. 3.

Rodriguez played a part in the drama in singles play for the second consecutive year as he dropped his opening set 6-4 before finding his groove for 6-0 and 6-2 wins at the fourth position.
