Gettysburg History plans four days of programs marking battle anniversary and America 250

Gettysburg History is offering a wide variety of opportunities to commemorate both the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the nation’s 250th birthday during four days of special programs from July 1-4.

The schedule features battlefield tours, lectures, live performances, book signings, film screenings and living history experiences designed to immerse visitors in Gettysburg’s past.

The series opens Wednesday, July 1, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with “Fields of Fire: Gettysburg’s First Day Farms,” led by historians Jim Hessler, Andrew Dalton and Phil Spaugy at 625 Biglerville Road. Later that evening, from 6 to 8:15 p.m., the same location will host “Boom Goes the History! Live from Gettysburg,” presented in partnership with the American Battlefield Trust.

On Thursday, July 2, actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith will present “Anna Deavere Smith and Basil Biggs: A Live Performance in Gettysburg” from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Gettysburg College’s Kline Theatre.

Friday, July 3, will feature a free Civil War Book Sale and Author Signings from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 625 Biglerville Road. Authors scheduled to participate include Tim Smith, Cindy Small, Bo Brinkman, Garry Adelman, Jeff Shaara, Tom McMillan, and Brad and Linda Gottfried.

That evening, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., visitors can attend a screening of *The Gettysburg Book: A Father, Son and The Killer Angels* at 25 Carlisle St.

The events conclude Saturday, July 4, with “Confederates Take the Shriver House,” a living history program scheduled from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at the Shriver House Museum, 307 Baltimore St.

In conjunction with the Independence Day program, visitors will receive 50% off admission to Beyond the Battle Museum on July 4. The organization also announced a Parents’ Day promotion on Sunday, July 26, when mothers and fathers will receive half-price admission to both Beyond the Battle Museum and the Shriver House Museum.

Advance tickets are required for most events, and organizers said only a limited number remain available.

Gettysburg History is the public-facing name of the Adams County Historical Society, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Gettysburg and Adams County through educational programs, museums and extensive archival collections. The organization operates the Beyond the Battle Museum and is recognized for its efforts to preserve artifacts and stories spanning the Civil War and the region’s broader history.
