Once a snow emergency declaration is issued for Gettysburg Borough, ALL vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes during a declared snow emergency. Enforcement to remove vehicles from snow emergency routes begin once a snow emergency is declared.

In a snow emergency, all main roadways and emergency routes will be the priority, while side streets and alleys will take the longest to clear of snow. The Borough asks for the public’s patience as the Borough’s crews work to keep roads and alleys passable.

The following information is important for all residents and businesses to know:

  1. ALL residents and businesses (property owners) are responsible for clearing their sidewalks within 24-hours of the end of precipitation. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a fine.
  2. Additionally, it is unlawful to place snow/ice in the street. Snow/ice must be cleared to a location other than a street. Gettysburg Police will be prepared to cite violators.
  3. The Borough also asks that residents clear snow from the areas surrounding fire hydrants. This allows the fire department better ability to timely respond to a fire emergency should one arise.
  4. No vehicles may be parked on a snow emergency route at any time the snow emergency is in effect.

NOTE: Removal of vehicles along a snow emergency route is required. The Borough reserves the right to tow vehicles along a snow emergency route at the owner’s expense. Violators may also be subject to a fine. This action is crucial in order to adequately clear snow from curb to curb.

  1. Residents are encouraged to park vehicles at the Racehorse Alley (RHA) Parking Garage or at the Gettysburg Area Recreation Authority (GARA) on Long Lane until the snow emergency is lifted.
  2. Clearing of Sidewalks: Everyone who owns or is otherwise in charge or control of any building or lot of land fronting or abutting on a sidewalk, whether as owner, tenant, occupant, lessee or licensee, shall remove and clear away or cause to be removed or cleared away snow and/or ice in order to create a path for the reasonably safe passage of pedestrians of at least 30 inches in width within so much of said sidewalk as is in front of or abuts on said building or lot of land. Please visit this link (https://ecode360.com/2735670) to see specifically how much time you have to remove snow/ice based on where your property is located. Time for removal starts after precipitation has stopped falling. In general, the center of town has 12 hours to clear snow and ice; outside of that has 24 hours.
