Fire Department units were immediately dispatched. Emergency personnel could not initially determine if the vehicle was occupied because of the intense heat and flames.

The PA State Police Were called to assist GPD with the investigation. Baltimore Street remains closed at this time. Once Fire Fighters had extinguished the fire, a lone occupant was discovered in the vehicle. The Adams County Coroner was called.

The vehicle was removed from the scene and taken to a secondary location for the Corner’s Office to investigate and attempt identification of the occupant. The vehicle type and owner were identified by Vehicle Identification Number.

Structural engineers were summoned and determined that the portions of the damaged building would have to be removed before the street could safely re-open. Utility Crews from the major utilities responded and disconnected service to the damaged structures.

Preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling northbound Entering the Borough of Gettysburg on Baltimore St at a high rate of speed. The operator failed to negotiate the right-hand curve in the roadway, ran off the left side of the roadway and impacted the buildings at 529 and 531 Baltimore St. Upon impact the vehicle burst into flames.

The identity of the operator is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

The Gettysburg Police Department would like to thank all responding emergency responders for their efforts and assistance at the scene. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call the Gettysburg Police at 717-334-1168.
