Gettysburg Prayer Event Scheduled For June 17

Several local churches within the Gettysburg Area Ministerium are setting aside 15 minutes for lamentation, repentance, and prayer on Wednesday, June 17th at noon. The event, scheduled on the 5th-year anniversary of the Emanuel Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, is meant to offer prayers for the community and world, as well as foster unity and hope as residents come together.

The prayer will be led along the streets in the shape of a cross, beginning at the square from Baltimore Street to Carlisle Street and York Road to Chambersburg Street. The gathering will have groups of 25 people or less on the steps of local churches and participating businesses along the road through the center of town.

The gathering is designed with social distancing in mind, in accordance with state and federal guidelines during the current phase of reopening. Participants are asked to wear masks for the safety of all who attend. The organizers also encourage people to keep the recommended distance between them, and have said they will do their best to ensure that will happen.

The event will occur regardless of the weather, with no rain date scheduled. Parking can be arranged through the churches in the borough of Gettysburg in order to prevent the clogging of parking spaces for local businesses over the lunch hour.

The public prayer is not intended to be a political statement, protest, or rally. It is an exercise of faith and love of all people, according to the Gettysburg Area Ministerium. While freedom of expression is encouraged, organizers have suggested that the presence of the participants take the place of signs and placards. There will be official ones provided to each location.
