Gettysburg Rec Park Reopens, Prepares for July 4 Fireworks

Gettysburg Rec Park Executive Director Erin Peddigree said that fireworks, sponsored and presented by Destination Gettysburg, will be displayed on July 4 from the Gettysburg Recreational Park football field.

The fireworks will start at 9:20 p.m. and last about 20 minutes.

Speaking of the fireworks, board member Steve Niebler said “I think it’s going to be great event for the community. We’ve tried to all of the right stuff.  You’ve got to do something and we’ve done the best job we can.”

Peddigree said there will be a fire truck and two ambulances on standby and that the Gettysburg Rotary Club will coordinate parking at the rec park.

“Everything pretty much in the park is open,” said Peddigree.” The Sterner building is mostly closed to reduce foot traffic, but the rooms can be rented out.

Peddigree said the rec park’s outdoor restrooms are open but people should bring their own hand sanitizer.

Peddigree said the restrooms are cleaned 3 or 4 times a day, the playgrounds are cleaned regularly, and the water at the dog park has been turned back on.

“That’s all we can do,” said Board President Steve Toddes.

Pedigree said reconstruction on Weikert baseball field is complete and that Little League has started practicing.

“I’m excited to see baseball and softball starting up,” said Laing.

Peddigree said three summer baseball tournaments have been scheduled. “Hopefully that will bring in some revenue we have missed.”

Peddigree said social distancing is required “but getting everyone to do it is the hard part.”

Reporting on Gettysburg Area Recreational Authority (GARA) finances, treasure Max Laing said “there have been very few revenue sources. We’ll start to receive some revenue as things start to reopen.”

“Looking at the budget, we’re OK.  We haven’t really been spending anything. We received $30,000 from Cumberland Township,” said Peddigree. “We’re increasing staff hours.  A lot of the pavilions are being rented.”
