Gettysburg Rec Park Use Expected to Expand in 2021 * Fireworks Planned * Delinquency Continues

The Gettysburg Area Recreational Authority (GARA) is expecting an uptick in use of the rec park in 2021, even though some major events have been cancelled.

Although the Library Fun Fest and the Green Gathering will not happen this year, there will be plenty of other activities.

“Lots of Little League players are signing up and the fields are ready to go,” said Executive Director Erin Peddigree. “We’re going to have pretty much all of the fields used.”

In addition to Little League, Peddigree said the park would be hosting flag football and other sports.

Peddigree said the amphitheater would be used heavily by church groups on Sundays, that Music, Gettysburg! would be offering outdoor concerts in July and August, and that the Susquehanna Opera will perform a concert in May.

An Easter egg hunt is also on the books.

The Green Gathering has helped removed 15 tree stumps from the park, and will plant trees and create a butterfly garden this year.

GARA is also working with local nonprofits to hold fireworks displays on July 4 and New Year’s Eve.

The GARA board heard from Girl Scouts who hope to plant anti-erosion staking in the park by placing live cuttings to help keep the soil intact.

Peddigree said there had been more incidents of delinquency in the skate park. “It’s really just six or so kids but we had a fight and I had to call the cops.”  Peddigree said the police knew who was involved and were trying to stop the behaviors.  “It’s just being there when it happens,” she said.
