Gettysburg Rocks, the annual live music charitable event held bi-annually in February and August, has become a cornerstone of community and charity, supporting a cause that touches hearts as deeply as the music that fills the air.
The genesis of Gettysburg Rocks traces back to a simple yet powerful idea conceived by Rob Simon. The turning point came when his daughter, Ashley, inspired by the spirit of giving and community support, approached him with a proposal that would soon blossom into a festival of hope and music. Their shared vision was to support the Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, a noble cause dedicated to conquering childhood cancer. Their mission resonated deeply with the Simons, driving them to bring their idea to life.
In an impressive feat of organization and passion, the first Gettysburg Rocks festival was orchestrated within an 11-week period, a testament to the community’s dedication to the cause. On the weekend of February 7th, 2014, Gettysburg was transformed into a vibrant hub of music and solidarity. With 130 live bands performing across 12 venues, the town pulsed with the energy of live music, drawing people from all walks of life to come together for a cause greater than themselves. The event was an unprecedented success, raising over $14,000 for Four Diamonds, marking the beginning of an enduring legacy.
The festival has since become a bi-annual tradition, eagerly anticipated by both locals and visitors alike. Across multiple venues, live bands take to the stage, their performances a powerful reminder of the difference collective action can make in the fight against childhood cancer. The funds raised in February are donated through Penn State Dance Marathon (Mont Alto) to Four Diamonds, while the August proceeds go directly to the organization, each dollar a step towards a future without childhood cancer.
As Gettysburg Rocks prepares for its next iteration this weekend, the community stands ready to welcome music lovers and philanthropists alike. The festival not only offers a diverse musical experience but also a chance to be part of a movement that transcends music, reaching into the heart of what it means to support one another in times of need. It’s a celebration of life, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of a community united by music and a shared mission to conquer childhood cancer.
