Gettysburg’s South Street Renovation Expanded

South Street, Gettysburg, located between Baltimore and Washington Streets near Unity Park, will receive a substantial makeover over the next two years including lighting, curbs, sidewalks, and repaving, as well as new storm drains, water and gas lines.

The borough will partner with the Gettysburg Municipal Authority, the Gettysburg Borough Storm Water Authority, and Columbia Gas on the project, most of which is scheduled to occur in 2021 and 2022.

The restoration will be funded in part by 2019 and 2020 State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) grants.

The decision to focus on South Street followed a request for public input. CDBG funds can be used for community development activities including revitalizing neighborhoods, economic development, and providing improved community facilities and services.  The awards must prioritize funding to the greatest degree feasible to activities that benefit low- and moderate-income persons.

The two-way street is currently very narrow and the changes will improve traffic flow by removing the parking spaces on one side of the street. The street is frequently used by emergency vehicles from Gettysburg Hospital and children walking to the middle school.
