Governor and Dept of Aging Have A 10-Year Plan

On Friday, Governor Josh Shapiro, alongside Pennsylvania’s Department of Aging Secretary Jason Kavulich, announced the launch of Aging Our Way, PA, a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing service delivery for older adults. This initiative marks Pennsylvania as the fifth state to develop such a blueprint, following the likes of California and Massachusetts.

Under the banner of Aging Our Way, PA, the plan outlines a detailed strategy to address critical aspects of elderly care such as healthcare, housing, transportation, and social connections, ensuring that services evolve with the aging population. The roadmap includes three detailed layers of implementation: five priorities, 36 strategies, and 163 tactics.

Governor Shapiro emphasized the plan’s expedited development, which took only one year to complete, contrasting with longer timelines in other states. “We are demonstrating that Pennsylvania is proactive and efficient in supporting our older adults,” Shapiro stated.

By 2030, older adults will represent one-third of Pennsylvania’s population, exceeding 3.8 million individuals. In response, Shapiro signed an Executive Order in May 2023, directing the Aging Department to spearhead the development of the master plan.

Secretary Kavulich expressed gratitude for the support and guidance in crafting a plan that caters to the growing needs of Pennsylvania’s older adults. “Aging Our Way, PA is about enhancing the quality of life and independence for our seniors, ensuring they can age comfortably in their own communities,” said Kavulich.

The plan also seeks an $11.7 million budget allocation for its initial phase and involves collaboration with over 20 state agencies and multiple stakeholders, including AARP, to enrich the lives of senior residents.

As the state’s senior population continues to burgeon, Aging Our Way, PA, stands as a pivotal initiative in shaping a future that respects and uplifts its elderly citizens, ensuring that Pennsylvania remains a vibrant, inclusive community for all ages.
