Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration participated in a Recovery in Nature event at Colonel Denning State Park on Wednesday, joining individuals in recovery to commemorate National Recovery Month. Hosted by the Pennsylvania Departments of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) and Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the event featured a recovery-focused hike, a butterfly release, and shared stories of healing from substance use disorder (SUD).
DDAP Secretary Dr. Latika Davis-Jones emphasized the connection between nature and recovery, highlighting the mental and physical health benefits outdoor activities provide. “Spending time in nature and SUD recovery go hand in hand,” said Davis-Jones, expressing gratitude for the event’s partnership with DCNR.

Tyanna Marge, Project Coordinator of PMHCA’s Region 5 Recovery Hub, reinforced the importance of community in recovery, noting that gatherings like these remind individuals that they are not alone.
The Recovery in Nature initiative is part of Governor Shapiro’s broader commitment to promote wellness across Pennsylvania, encouraging residents to engage with the state’s 12,000 miles of trails. The initiative aligns with the administration’s goal of integrating outdoor recreation into recovery support, as highlighted by DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn.
As Recovery Month continues, events will be held across the state, fostering healing and community through nature’s restorative power.
